Eurovea - new central neighborhood of Bratislava

Just three years ago an area between two Bratislava bridges - Old Bridge and the most recently built Apollo Bridge - had been abandoned and inaccessible. Now it is busy with final preparations as Eurovea, the new central city quarter of Bratislava, is to officially open on March 26, 2010. The name Eurovea is a play on "Europe" and "vea", which means a way. Ballymore, the Irish developer behind Eurovea, bought 230,000 sq. metres in the 1990's and announced the planned investment worth EUR 266 million in 2006.

The space undergoing development is special to Bratislava's Old Town, where large part of the former Old Town had been destroyed during communism regime in 1960's and 1970's. Independent Theatre Stoka was located here before, Faculties of Philosophy and Law of Comenius University are close as well and the whole area is within five minutes walk from the Old Town's Main Square. New Slovak National Theatre building opened nearby in 2008. An important part of Eurovea development - the new Danube promenade - is one kilometre long and enables visitors to access the Danube foreshoreway. Two statues found their place in the Central Square near the Danube - Lion on the pillar commemorating Czechoslovakia - the common state of Slovaks and Czechs (divided in 1993) and Milan Rastislav Stefanik, French army general and important politician crucial in eastablishing the first democratic Czechoslovak Republic in 1920's.

Shopping

Eurovea's Pribina Galleria featuring 60,000 square metres on three floors will be the first real shopping mall in the city centre (Aupark shopping mall is located on the other side of Danube in Petrzalka district). Lower ground floor and ground floor will include fashion and sports shops as well as electronics and grocery supermarkets. More luxury brands including fashion clothing and shoes will have their boutiques at the first floor. The brands include Marks & Spencer, Peek & Cloppenburg, Debenhams, H&M, Sportisimo, New Yorker, Reserved, s.Oliver, Bata, grocery Billa and book store Panta Rhei.

Restaurants, cafes, culture and fitness

The first floor of Pribina Galleria will also include a food court with nice city views. In addition, a music bar and nine cinema screens (including an IMAX) will offer their services to visitors. Relax and fitness centre will also include a swimming pool and a juice bar on the roof terrace. City Auditorium residing in the reconstructed historical building of Storage no. 7 should offer its premises to cultural events such as concerts and theatrical performances.

Parking

1700 parking spots will be available to visitors, in addition to others reserved for the office tenants.

Hotels

Five star Hotel Sheraton, a member of Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc., opened its gates to the guests at the end of February 2010.

Offices

There will be three office buildings opened in Eurovea named Central 1, Central 2 and Central 3. Central 1 building will have five floors with more than 7,000 square metres with shops on the ground floor. Ellipsoid Central 2 features six floors and is the first building visitors will be passing by on entering the district. Central 3 with 14,000 square metres of space spread over the six floors is located by Pribinova street on the farthest side of Eurovea.

Apartments

Eurovea also offers apartments blocks for living purposes. Apartments had their fifteen minutes of fame when the highest price of approx. one million and eighthundred thousand Euros was announced during the peak of Bratislava's construction and realt estate boom in 2008. Studios, multiple bedroom apartments, lofts and penthouses with a green roof terrace are on offer.

Location

Eurovea district is reachable on foot, by bike, by car as well as by the public transport. Bus line 133 should be going via Pribinova street. Two piers exist to also allow smaller passenger ships to anchor. Bus station Mlynske nivy is reachable by bus within five minutes. There is also a nearby tram line to Main train station (about 15 minutes). Drive to Bratislava Airport takes up to 20 minutes. Connection to the Slovak Highway D1 is some 3 kms away.

The second phase of development, currently postponed, should bring more tall buildings in the direction of Apollo Bridge.
